Am I reading too many things? October 4, 2007

Once or twice when I was a kid, Mom gave me a hard time for reading more than one book at a time. Well, Mom, I’m still doing it. Here’s what I’m reading now:

Juliet Marillier, Daughter of the Forest
Søren Kierkegaard, Training in Christianity
Julie Morgenstern, Making Work Work
Teresa of Avila, Interior Castle (audiobook)
Henry Ketcham, The Life of Abraham Lincoln (audiobook)
Not to mention assorted magazines and scanning the local newspaper.

I think it’s just that I don’t finish one thing quickly enough and get interested in the next thing. I don’t have any trouble keeping things straight, but I guess I’d have to say this might be a factor in it seeming like it takes forever for me to finish any one book. 😉

Do you do this? Why or why not?

I can’t believe I haven’t blogged since May. It must be a May-October thing. Ba-dump. OK, bad joke.

Granted, I relocated, and my husband couldn’t help with any move-related tasks because he had surgery, and I had to leave him behind for 6 weeks because he had a second surgery the day before we were scheduled to be out of our house, and then after I got up here I developed some health problems of my own, and even though I’m doing somewhat better now, I still have boxes in every room except the bathroom…

I didn’t read any fiction during that period. I don’t think I even read any BOOKS for months. Just magazines. I saw some movies, but apparently none of them prompted me to blog. The only one that made me think about blogging was the Hallmark Channel’s sequel to the MERLIN miniseries, but I couldn’t quite generate the energy to pan something. Even Sam Neill couldn’t save that script, though he strove valiantly.

I’ve just added another blog to my blogroll. superfastreader has tons of book reviews, in a mind-boggling array of categories, and is also a fellow WordPress blogger. I think that’s what woke me up to blogging again. Check it out. Wish I was a super fast reader! Or even just a kinda fast reader.

Back soon with a blog about a book I can praise!

Why didn’t I blog for a while? Because before I even got over my illness, my husband suffered an aortic dissection. This is what killed actor John Ritter.

However, my husband has Marfan syndrome, so we knew he had a risk for dissection. When we told the ER doctor that, she was able to get him stabilized.

This article shows a good diagram of dissection. Scroll down to find the diagram labeled “Descending Aortic Dissection”—this is what happened to my husband. The inner lining of the aorta separated, allowing blood to flow between the inner and outer walls of the aorta. The aorta is then weakened enough that it could rupture.

Last Wednesday, surgeon Richard Toon M.D. performed a procedure that’s only a couple of years old. Instead of replacing part of the aorta, which would entail open heart surgery, he put in a TAG graft. (Click on the animation link!) It’s a tube that goes inside the aorta and covers up the place where the dissection started. It presses the torn lining back up against the aorta so it can reattach, if I understand correctly. It also bypasses an aneurysm that was getting started, as in this picture. And it’s put in place via a catheter that’s inserted into the femoral artery—much the same way that they do a cardiac catheterization test.

The risks were approximately half those of the replacement surgery, and the recovery will be easier.
